World Water Day Celebration was held on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Srinivas School of Engineering, Mukka, Mangalore. In order to focus and address the issues related to fresh water and also to find a concrete solution for the water related problems, the Dept. of Civil Engg of Srinivas School of Engg Mukka organised World Water Day celebration followed by a guest lecture on water issues. .
Sri CA A Raghavendra Rao, President, A Shama Rao Foundation Mangalore inaugurated the World Water Day celebration by lighting the lamp. Er Sri P Ranganath Aithal, Chairman, Association of Consulting Civil Engineer’s (India) Mangalore was the Chief Guest of the function. Dr. Subhash C Yaragal, Professor, Dept. of Civil Engg, NITK Surathkal was the Guest of Honour of the function. Sri Vijaya Vishnu Mayya-Former Chairman, ACCE (I) Mangalore, Er Sri Umesh Shetty, Manager, Technical Services, ACC Limited, Dr. Shreeprakash B – Principal of the college and Dr. Ramakrishna Hegde-HOD Dept of Civil Engg were present on the dais.
Dr.Ramakrishna Hegde welcomed chief guest and guests of honour of the day. In his key note address, Dr.Ramakrishna Hegde explained the importance of celebration of World Water Day and participation of the students representing the younger generation of the society.
Speaking on the occasion, Er Sri P Ranganath Aithal said that ground water table is reducing day by day and hence shortage of water is increasing. He urged the young engineers to have more awareness to understand the importance of water and hence sustainable use of fresh water by using effectively and efficiently.
Guest of Honour Dr Subhash C Yaragal appreciated the Civil Engg Dept of Srinivas School of Engg Mukka for oprganising World Water Day celebration which is very much essential in the current circumstances. He spoke on disputes of water in Taluk, District and State levels and urged the students to preserve the fresh water sources for the next generation.
Er Sri Vijaya Vishnu Mayya spoke on the importance of fresh water and said that being a Civil Engineer; it is our responsibility to protect water sources and to contribute the society by creating more awareness on the water issues. He appreciated the Dept. of Civil Engineering for organizing World Water Day, an event emphasising environmental and water issues.
Er Sri Umesh Shetty also appreciated the Department of Civil Engg and the College Management for providing a platform to create social awareness in addressing water issues and related problems.
On this occasion, Er Sri Vijaya Vishnu Mayya and Er Sri Umesh Shetty were felicitated by the college for their contribution in the field of Civil Engg and for creating awareness programs in water related issues.
Handouts carrying message of saving water sources and conservation of water was released on this occasion by the dignitaries on the dais. Prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions like collage, poster making, quiz, etc. on water issues.
Principal Dr. Shreeprakash B expressed happiness about the event to create an awareness Dr. Shreeprakash also said that it is the duty of every youngster to protect the water sources, use the water effectively and also to preserve the water for the next generation.
In his presidential remark, Sri CA A Raghavendra Rao said that if we do not take care of water sources, it may lead to serious acute shortage of drinking water in the coming years. Sri CA A Raghavendra Rao spoke on the possibility of desalination of sea water which can provide a solution for the shortage of drinking water. Sri CA A Raghavendra Rao also addressed the issue of purification of river water and motivated the students to take care of protecting water sources and to find a concrete solution for the drinking water problems.

Mr Praneeth Kotian and Ms Hitha Kumble were the Master of Ceremony of the formal function.
After the formal function, a guest lecture was delivered by Dr. Subhash C Yaragal on “Coping with Water Scarcity”. Er Sri Bharath S and Er Sri Narendra Prabhu of ACCE (I) Mangalore, Faculty members and Civil Engg students of Srinivas School of Engg were present for the function and guest lecture.
